From KTM's press material:
2014 will be another historic milestone for KTM. After the spectacular launch of the 1290 Super Duke prototype, the company follows up with the long awaited premiere of the production 1290 Super Duke R. KTM thus completes the reconstruction and expansion of its street series heralded in 2011 with the launch of the 125 Duke. Crowning their legendary range of Naked Bikes, the Austrians deliver 1290 Super Duke R – a machine that re-defines the very notion of a streetfighter and is ready to raid in all adjacent segments. The 1290 R is the most extreme Super Duke ever and more radical than any of its predecessors. It is nothing short of the ideal embodiment of the KTM philosophy: endless power, the highest precision, perfect ergonomics, the finest ingredients, not an ounce too much weight, ready to race! KTM 1290 Super Duke R – high tech in an aggressive design with unprecedented functionality and razor sharp sporting credentials, reduced to the true essence. A new kind of peg to fit none of the existing holes, it needs not fear any competitor.
The pre-history of the new 1290 Super Duke R began with a double sensation in 2002. KTM CEO Stefan Pierer baffled the world of motorcycles on the Intermot in Munich with the announcement that KTM was going to rise to Europe's best selling motorcycle manufacturer, as well as a project study for a naked bike that enraptured press and trade fair patrons alike – the Super Duke. It took ten years until Stefan Pierer's prognosis came true, to the astonishment of all the experts. But it took only three years to turn the stunning concept into a no less stunning production bike. Even then, the KTM 990 Super Duke underscored how serious the market dominating maker of off-road bikes was when it finally took off to enrich the street motorcycle segments.
Even with the 990 Super Duke of 2005, the defining features were a light trellis frame, an unobstructed view to the mighty engine, a slim waistline with a short rear, and that inimitable stroke of designer Gerald Kiska. The free-revving, 120hp V2 with heaps of torque, the extremely agile suspension, the formidable lean angles and a braking system beyond any shadow of doubt combined the lightness of a supermoto with the punchy thrust of a super sports bike. The 990 Super Duke soon became a preferred choice of sports riders and streetfighters who loved the unmistakable rumble of the 75° V2, who wanted to stand out from the crowd, and who hated watching other bikes from behind.
For model year 2007, KTM thoroughly upgraded the 990 Super Duke and added the even more aggressive sister model 990 Super Duke R with a stiffer suspension and fine racing goodies like a steering damper and carbon parts. With even greater stability and precision, feedback brought to perfection and the response optimised, now everybody could choose between two variants that aspired to rule the twisties but also intended to be key players on the race track. A year later, thanks to its revised engine with now 132hp, the 990 Super Duke reached the peak of its maturity which until today is a benchmark among the naked bikes. It developed into a permanent fixture of the sports and streetfighter scene.
**The most potent naked bike in the world **
Once again it was a concept bike that finally caused another international sensation, heralding the entrance of a KTM production bike made to put the world of motorcycles into turmoil. On the EICMA 2012 in Milan, KTM unleashed the “Beast” with the engine of the KTM Superbike RC8 R, bored up to almost 1.3 litres, which has since sent eye and ear witnesses into rapture at its few public appearances. Only a year later, KTM now launches the domesticated (meaning: street legal) version of that concept bike. Even the first glance at the new 1290 Super Duke R will tell you that the “Beast” has in no way been declawed in the process.
The aggressive design of the new 1290 Super Duke R betrays it immediately and unmistakably: the KTM development engineers may have stuck to the concept of the typical, delicate-looking trellis frame wrapped tightly around a mighty V2 powerplant. But they have put together a comprehensive package that outshines all previous streetfighters and naked bikes – including those made by KTM itself. The reason for sticking to traditional KTM principles is that there is no better alternative. But it is only the degree of consistency with which KTM presses ahead in the development of these components combining them with high-end technology and the latest electronics that yields a performance like the new 1290 Super Duke R has to offer. At a maximum output of 180hp and only 189kg of weight, the latest Super Duke generation realises a power-to-weight ratio previ ously reserved for maxed-out hyper sports bikes. And with a load of the latest electronic assistance systems, from the disengagable ABS with “Supermoto” mode to the also multi-staged, lean-angle sensing traction control, it defines new benchmarks for streetfighters and naked bikes regarding controllability and safety.
As a baseline for the engine of the 1290 Super Duke R, the KTM engineers decided not to choose the predecessor's twin, although it has proven itself a thousandfold. Instead, they went to the highly potent LC8 engine of the KTM Superbike 1190 RC8 R. The technicians placed the focus of development not so much on increasing maxi mum power, which is plentiful anyway, but on achieving a matchless torque delivery and maximum usability of the engine power. In doing so, they managed to pull off the seemingly impossible by raising the V2's elasticity to previously unattained levels without even slightly impairing the almost proverbial spontaneity of its response. With the stroke lengthened by 2.5mm, the short stroke engine starts heaping immense scoops of torque onto the crankshaft already in the lowest rev range, while its irrepressible hunger for action is only reigned in at 10,050 rpm by the rev limiter. The extremely light four-valve engi ne now sets free no less than 180hp of maximum power and 144Nm of maximum torque from 1,301cc of displacement. Its dual ignition increases the fuel mileage, while lowering the emissions and provi ding a smooth and refined low rev range. The hydraulic anti-hopping clutch prevents annoying rear-wheel chatter under heavy braking and lowers the manual clutch force. The V2 engine with 75° of cylin der angle and an electronic engine management with ride-by-wire function brings breathtaking performance, convincing real-world practicality and straight-razor precision into such perfect harmony that its applications range from urban commuting to the race track, where it has all the makings of a potential Superbike terror.
The chassis of the new 1290 Super Duke R copes easily with the challenges that result from the unique riding dynamics of the new KTM. Besides the ultra-lightweight but extremely rigid chrome-molybdenum steel trellis frame with its excellent geometry and bolt-on rear subframe, the credits for this go largely to the top quality and widely adjustable WP suspension components. The front wheel is guided by a pair of 48mm upside-down forks with separate damping circuits. The rear wheel, mounted within a new, especially stable and ravishingly beautiful single-sided aluminium swing arm, has a central pressurised monoshock with manually adjustable spring pre-load. Forks and monoshock offer wide ranges of adjustment from very comfortable to extremely sporty, so the chassis may be adjusted to the rider's preferences.
The unique package of a husky engine and perfectly balanced chassis delivers boundless riding fun and high levels of safety in all conditions and at every pace. Absolute predictability and top safety is not the least guaranteed by the unsurpassed Brembo brakes, the newly developed Dunlop tires and the assistance systems of the new KTM 1290 Super Duke R developed in close collaboration with Bosch. Among these groundbreaking assistance systems are the combined anti-lock brake system ABS and the ride-mode technology with lean-angle sensing traction control MTC (motorcycle traction control). In addition, ABS can not only be completely disengaged but also has a “Supermoto” mode that allows a higher degree of bike lift-up as well as complete rear wheel lock-up. The motorcycle traction control MTC, which can also be disengaged, adds three different modes, allowing different degrees of slippage at the flick of a switch on the left handlebar.
Besides its breathtaking dynamics, the 1290 Super Duke R therefore delivers captivating rideability, convincing everyday practicality and top safety. Perfectly tuned down to the finest details, the package of engine and chassis combines high functionality with unsurpassed performance in a virtually ideal manner. This means the 1290 Super Duke R is not so much the crowning finish of a long success story but a complete package newly developed without compromise, destined to convert optimum performance into ultimate riding fun at maximum safety. The 1290 Super Duke R will redefine the levels of performance possible with an unfaired motorcycle. More than that, it will write history.
One of the most pronounced strengths of the KTM development department is the close networking of the different project groups, which ensures that year after year, any model family may benefit from another one. Like the engine of the first Super Duke was formerly based on the two-cylinder of the Adventure, the big twin of the new Super Duke is now descended from one of the most powerful and refined V2 powerplants of our times, the engine of the KTM Superbike RC8 R. But the technicians based in Mattighofen would not be KTM engineers if they just left it at that, if they were the sort of people satisfied to simply pick different elements from the KTM construction kit and call it a new development. Perfection is in their DNA. This means they have left not a single component untouched in adapting and developing the Superbike engine "Made in Mattighofen" and pulled out all the stops of the art of engine design.
The technicians increased the displacement of the LC8 powerplant from the 1,195cc of the 1190 RC8 R to 1,301cc for the 1290 Super Duke R. And not by a simple bore job either, but by balancing the bore enlargement (from 105.0 to 108.0mm) with a longer stroke (up from 69.0 to 71.0mm). At only 62 kilos, the extremely narrow four-valve engine is among the lightest Big Twins in the world, developing no less than 180hp of maximum power and 144Nm of maximum torque with its electronic engine management, ride-bywire function, dual ignition and selective mapping. Thanks to lots of low-end torque, plenty of mid-range punch, an extremely quick response and breathtaking maximum power, combined with remar kable refinement and unusually low vibrations, the upgraded engine covers the complete bandwidth expected of a sporty naked bike, from enjoyable cruising to all-out mayhem. In addition, although the bike has significantly more power, the 1290 Super Duke R consumes noticeably less fuel than its predecessor, which means it is not just easier on the budget but also achieves an impressive range with its 18 litre tank. Service intervals stretched to 15,000 km also contribute to saving costs.
Borrowed from Formula 1, the ‘box-in-a-box’ piston design gives the 1290 Super Duke R’s pistons maximum resilience despite an extremely low and lightweight design. Even though they have a three millimetre larger diameter than the pistons of the 1190 RC8 R, the ones of the Super Duke R are another 47 grams lighter per piston. This minimizes the oscillating masses, achieving optimum engine response. In addition, the piston skirts carry a high-tech, hard-anodised surface coating which not only minimizes friction but is also especially tough, thereby enhancing durability.
The 1290 Super Duke R's highly modern DOHC four-valve cylinder heads with dual ignition deliver a significant contri bution to the outstanding performance of the LC8 engine. Via separate mappings, the dual ignition controls the sparks of the two spark plugs per cylinder head independently from each other, achieving a more efficient combustion as well as a smoother combustion cycle. The results are more power, more torque and more refinement, lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions. Controlling the charge cycle through flow-optimised ducts, the four valves of each cylinder head are actuated by two overhead camshafts via DLC-coated finger follo wers. Now lighter because they are now single-piece, the precision-cast camshafts have the same valve timings as those of the super sports bike RC8 R. Harder exhaust valve seat rings and nitrified exhaust valves minimize wear and extend the valve play inspection intervals – one of the prerequisites for lengthening the new Super Duke R's service intervals to 15,000 kilometres.
The electronic Keihin engine manage ment system with ride-by-wire throttle valves controls the stateof-the-art electronic fuel injection with a main focus on maximum power, combined with predictable engine characteristics as well as an instantaneous but perfectly controllable response. For the 1290 Super Duke R, the throttle bodies have been enlarged to a valve diameter of 56mm instead of 52mm in order to optimise the power delivery.
The 1290 Super Duke R's slipper clutch automatically reduces the pressure on the clutch discs whenever the torque feedback toward the engine becomes too great. This way, rear-wheel chatter under forceful braking is efficiently eliminated. In addition, it increases pressure on the clutch discs in proportion to the engine torque, so softer clutch springs can be used. This in turn means that less force is necessary to operate the hydraulically actuated clutch – it now has a sensitive single-finger.
The very low flywheel mass of the 1290 Super Duke R's crankshaft delivers a decisive contribution to its instantaneous and free-revving engine response. In addition, the flow-optimized crankweb shape supports the especially low-loss operation of the crank gear sustained by a third oil pump for evacuation of the crank case.
The 1290 Super Duke R’s elaborate, newly designed exhaust system is manufactured in Mattighofen completely from stainless steel. Containing a three-way catalytic converter within its pre-silencer, hundreds of dyno runs and complex calculations ensure that the exhaust system delivers a decisive contribution to the highly uniform torque delivery and the exceedingly clean emissions of the powerful twin cylinder engine.
An engine with 1.3 litres of displacement and 180hp, however refined and predictable it may be, poses a veritable challenge for any suspension engineer. Especially so if the motorcycle in question is supposed to cover the complete bandwidth of a sporty naked bike, from enjoyable urban cruising all the way to full mayhem mode on the race track. The new 1290 Super Duke R's suspension not only converts the resulting challenges into a performance benefit. With its light-footed handling and razor-sharp precision, it also offers the rider a great safety benefit. The preconditions for this superiority are top quality chassis components on the cutting edge of technology, like the extremely stable steel trellis frame and the fully adjustable high end suspension components by WP Suspension.
The 1290 Super Duke R's trellis frame in the typical KTM design is made of thin-walled, stainless chrome-molybdenum steel, has a bolt-on rear subframe made of light steel tubes and delivers superior stability at an extremely low weight of only 9.2kg. To ensure a perfect fit and the highest welding quality standards, the steel pipes are manufactured with extreme precision, then laser-cut and welded in place by robots. A top quality surface coating protects the frame from corrosion.
The ravishing new single-sided aluminium swing arm of the 1290 Super Duke R is not only extremely light and stable but also manufactured with special precision and with ample dimensions – the rear wheel runs on an axle with a 50mm diameter and is locked down with a central 60mm nut. By design, the single-sided swing arm's flexural behaviour and rigidity are perfectly tuned to the trellis frame. Chain slack is dialled in with a highly precise eccentric adjuster.
The directly linked, top quality WP Suspension monoshock on the rear swing arm offers 156 millimetres of rear wheel travel and numerous adjustments over wide ranges. Damping is separately adjusted for compression and rebound – the compression stage even has separate circuits for high and low compression speeds. In addition, thanks to a new polymer locking nut, the spring pre-load can now be adjusted manually once the clamp is loosened.
The 1290 Super Duke R's extremely stable and warp resistant upside-down front forks by WP Suspension with 48 mm fork tubes and 125 milli metres of travel also allow to fine tune the suspension perfectly to the intended use and the rider's preference thanks to numerous adjustments of damping. Compression and rebound damping are not merely separately adjustable: due to the split principle, where the left fork takes over compression and the right one the rebound damping, they are indeed completely sepa rated, without adjusting the one slightly influencing the other as in conventional forks. This way, the rider finds the desired set-up more quickly and precisely.
A first rate suspension makes the new 1290 Super Duke Rstable, precise and predictable. In much the same way, itsbrakes owe their awesome stopping power, precise feel andcomplete absence of fading to the finest components madeby Brembo. And its combined anti-lock braking systemABS, which comes as standard equipment, is just asflexible and adaptable as the versatile, multi-talentednew Super Duke generation itself.
KTM is proud that due to its extraordinary stability and knife-edge precision the 1290 Super Duke R is less susceptible to kickback. But when you give a 180hp motorbike the beans, the front wheel can get a little light on occasion, and a pothole or short bump can lead to kickback in such a situation. For safety reasons, the 1290 Super Duke R is therefore equipped with a reliable and sensitive hydraulic steering damper by WP Suspension.
The front brakes are efficiently supported from the rear wheel by a perforated, 240 mm disc brake and a fixed two-piston calliper. The incredib le potential of the Brembo brakes can be fully utilised on the 1290 Super Duke R thanks to its low centre of gravity, sticky Dunlop tires and aggressive ABS set-up.
Dual, floating, perforated 320 mm Brembo disc brakes with two top-end M-50 radial mono bloc four-piston callipers and a radial master cylinder deliver more than adequate deceleration on the 1290 Super Duke R's front wheel. An adjustable lever ensures the perfect reach for every rider. complete absence of fading to the finest components made by Brembo. And its combined anti-lock braking system ABS, which comes as standard equipment, is just as flexible and adaptable as the versatile, multi-talented new Super Duke generation itself.
ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS and ELECTRONICS
The 1290 Super Duke R is not only among the lightest, most powerful and most versatile of all naked bikes, it also gives the rider the greatest possible support in using the machine's fascinating dynamic potential. First off, highly developed electronic controls and assistance systems like ride mode, traction control and ABS are standard. In addition, the new Super Duke R offers a multitude of individual set-up options to adjust the bike to the intended use and rider preferences. This spread ranges from the numerous suspension adjustments to the different ride and traction control modes of the MTC and the ABS anti-lock brakes.
Ride-by-wire means the throttle valves of the electronic injection system are no longer controlled by mechanical cable. Instead, the move ments of the twist grip are processed by a computer which in turn uses actuators to control the throttles. But the 1290 Super Duke R’s ride-by-wire function achieves even more: it automatically translates the rider’s twist grip input electronically into throttle positions that perfectly match the current riding condi tions. No more choking or juddering, and unintentional wheelies are also a thing of the past. The 1290 Super Duke R’s ride-by-wire system ensures a perfect delivery of the ample torque in every situation, combining maximum performance with optimum efficiency.
In order to ensure safe deceleration on the highest level, the 1290 Super Duke R is equipped with an anti-lock braking system as standard. Applied by KTM in close cooperation with Bosch, the system can be disengaged and uses the highly sophisticated Bosch braking pressure modulator 9ME as well as the latest software. Like no other ABS, it stands for extremely short braking distances, combined with optimum vehicle control.
The system modulates the braking pressure in such a way as to avoid locking up the wheels as well as the danger of slipping to the side that goes with it, while also effectively minimizing any tendencies to roll over in emergency stops on grippy surfaces.
Depending on the terrain and riding style, the rider may select the "Street" or "Supermoto" ABS modes or disengage the ABS completely with the flick of the mode switch on the handle bar. In "Supermoto" mode, the system allows a higher degree of bike lift-up than in "Street" mode. In addition, rear brake pressure control by the modulator is disengaged, so the rider can apply the rear brake autonomously and even lock it up. This way, well-controlled slides can be introduced by locking up the rear wheel – a prerequisite for setting a more ambitious pace on tracks closed to the general public.
**RIDE MODE TECHNOLOGY **
The ride mode technology and standard, disengageable motorcycle traction control MTC of the 1290 Super Duke R ensure sporty but fully controllable traction on any surface by regulating the LC8 engine's power delivery in accordance with the mode pre-selected in the onboard computer, as well as the slippage detected by the MTC. The 1290 Super Duke R rider may choose from three ride modes that utilize different engine power mappings: “Street” and “Sport” with 180hp of maximum power and the corresponding, powerful response, as well as “Rain” with 100hp of maximum power and a softer power delivery. In addition, the traction control allows for different amounts of rear wheel slippage in the different ride modes. On wet tarmac or problematic road surfaces, the “Rain” ride mode makes for a relaxed riding experience despite the inhospitable conditions with a softer power delivery, a reduction of engine power to a maximum of 100hp and minimal rear wheel slippage. In “Street” ride mode, MTC allows somewhat more slippage than in “Rain” mode, as well as ensuring a quicker response and delimiting the engine to a full 180hp. Safely controlled rear wheel slides are allowed in “Sport” ride mode, so the engine can release its full potential – including light power slides on the exit of turns. Finally, the highly ambitious can completely disengage the MTC in order to fully enjoy the 1290 Super Duke R's breath-taking power in their own fashion and without electronic help.
MTC / TRACTION CONTROL
The traction control reacts immediately whenever the rear wheel speed increases without a proportionate increase of vehicle speed. To achieve this, MTC makes use of the quick reaction time of the 1290 Super Duke R's ride-by-wire system, reducing engine output (and therefore propulsion) via the throttles until the system has re duced the amount of slippage to the level determined to be the optimum by the current drive mode selection. All this not only occurs within milliseconds and with an extremely smooth, hardly noticeable intervention, but also in accordance with the current lean angle. At increasing lean angles, cornering force is increasingly lost. Therefore, MTC will allow proportionately less torque on the rear wheel as lean angle increases. This way, the rider of the new Super Duke R can focus completely on choosing his line and observing the traffic – a decisive contribution to active safety, while maximum performance and the highest levels of riding enjoyment are guaranteed.
The preconditions for a riding assistance system as complex as the 1290 Super Duke R's MTC are the lightning-quick acquisition and evaluation of numerous parameters like roll and yaw rate, longitudinal and lateral acceleration as well as squat and lean angles, and fur thermore a close integration of the system with the engine management and the ride-by-wire control. Therefore, numerous sensors of the 1290 Super Duke R capture the necessary data and transmit their results to the ride-by-wire and the engine management, which prioritizes these control commands above the rider's twist grip input. This intervention via the throttles is performed a lot smoother than the common masking of ignition or injection signals as utilized by the conventional systems of other makers. As the 1290 Super Duke R's rider hardly notices the activities of the traction control, a yellow indicator light starts blinking in the cockpit whenever the MTC engages. A highly sophisticated system reflecting the cutting edge of technology, KTM has developed and implemented the MTC in close cooperation with Bosch and Keihin.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL COCKPIT AND MODE SWITCH
The 1290 Super Duke R provides all necessary and desirable information via a sophisticated, clearly arranged combination meter made by automotive supplier VDO. The core information is supplied by a central instrument with an analogue-style rev counter with an integrated, adjustable shift light and an LCD display. This display is domi nated by a digital speedometer, complemented by a digital clock, a gear indicator, bar displays for the coolant temperature and fuel level, as well as readouts for the currently selected drive mode.
To the left of the central meter, a secondary LCD serves to display important additional information. As the on-board computer’s main display, it offers a multitude of different menu pages. These pages are browsed and operated with the four control keys of the mode switch on the left handlebar which are used, among others, to select the assistance system modes: the rider scrolls through different screens like “Drive Mode” or “MTC – ABS” using the up and down arrow keys and selects an assistance system for configuration with the “Set” key on the right. This leads down to the next menu level with the set-up options. Here, you can once more scroll through the settings with the arrow keys and select one using the “Set” key. At any time, the “Exit” key on the left of the modes switch will return you back up to the previous menu level until you reach the “Favourites” menu. All other settings like time, trip meter or language are accomplished in the same, self-explanatory manner – riders will master the menu navigation in no time. When restarting the motorcycle, the most recent settings are invoked again.
For safety reasons, the ABS and traction control can only be disengaged below a very slow walking pace, preferably at a standstill. Changing the four load-out modes of the optional electronic suspension EDS is also only supported below walking pace. All other mode changes can be selected on the go at any speed and activated by closing the twist grip until they engage.
Furthermore, using the mode switch, 1290 Super Duke R owners may generate a menu page to display five preferred read-outs selected with the on-board computer. These are then displayed as “Favourites” while riding. They can be chosen from a wide range of available information, like odometer and trip meter read-out, ambient and engine temperature, voltage, average speed, average and current rate of fuel consumption or remaining range, and even the status of rider assistance systems.
DAYTIME RIDING LIGHT
The 1290 Super Duke R is equipped with an LED daylight riding light DRL. Light emitting diodes placed above the headlight ensure the bike is nearly impossible to overlook in traffic by day. In waning light, like at dusk or in tunnels, sensors control an automatic switch from the DRL to the headlight's low beam. The rear lights and indicators of the 1290 Super Duke R also use LED technology.
**Ergonomics and comfort **
The 1290 Super Duke R's remarkable versatility made it a challenge for KTM's development engineers to reconcile the most diverse demands on ergonomics and comfort. But the technicians in Mattighofen mastered even this challenge, and in a more than convincing fashion: the new 1290 Super Duke R grants its rider all the freedom of movement and all the comfort he needs for full focus on the race track, ambitious back road dashes, relaxed swinging through the twisties or easy going joyrides.
SEAT, FOOTPEGS, HANDLEBARS
Upholstered with top quality 3D foam, the two-part seat transmits the suspension feedback so clearly that the 1290 Super Duke R never leaves the rider in doubt about what is going on at the wheels' contact patches. At the same time, the cushion delivers sufficient comfort for hours of riding, long after soft cushions would have sagged and required taking yet another break. The triangle defined by the rider's seat, the perfectly shaped, tapered alloy handlebars and the rider foot pegs leads to a focused riding position with the torso bent slightly forward, which automatically prepares the rider for a brisk pace without exhausting him even after hours of cruising.
