Occam's Razor: Buell XB9R Firebolt Road Test

Buell's minimalist XB9R Firebolt creates a new Sportfighter category. Is this sportbiking's future?

Production Firebolts have belt guards and tensioners that are quite different from the units seen at the bike's introduction. The guard now practically encloses the belt, and the roller has a larger diameter. Both address belt longevity issues that cropped up in early testing.

We have mixed feelings about the ZTL disc. Stopping power is excellent, but there's not much feedback. Our test unit's disc developed high spots and went totally black after a day at the track, but still worked fine.

While Buell has experimented with using the ZTL brake setup on the Pro Thunder bikes, Ciccotto's bike wears a standard, dual-disc arrangement with Nissin six-pot calipers. Wheels are 16.5" Marchesini cast-magnesium, and wear the latest Dunlop slicks. Engine displacement is at the class limit of 1350cc, with both a bigger bore and longer stroke than stock. The large carbon-fiber duct feeds the airbox as well as cools the rear cylinder, but is much larger than the stock piece.

In order to more easily change gearing to suit various tracks, the Hal's bike uses chain rather than belt drive. Because the bike has such a short swingarm that sits at a steep angle, chain tension varies substantially and an idler sprocket is used in place of the stock belt tensioner. Note also in this picture the braced swingarm (modified with chain adjuster) and the carbon fiber duct for air to exit from cooling the rear cylinder head.

The engine's vibes are isolated from the chassis by two rubber mounts and three heim joint linkages that let the motor move in a plane parallel with the wheels. The setup works great above 3000 rpm.

Check out how far the clip-ons are in front of the steering stem-you sit a good couple of inches further forward relative to the steering stem than on any other sportbike.
