The '04 season has already given Spies a taste of ups and downs. The Yoshimura Suzuki team tried a gamble on the more maneuverable (but less powerful) 750cc GSX-R rather than the normal 1000cc machine in the AMA Superstock race at Birmingham, Alabama, due to the circuit's tighter layout. It backfired, however, and in struggling to keep up with the faster bikes of the leaders, Spies overshot a turn and crashed heavily in the sand trap. He thankfully survived unscathed.
