Our buyer's guide is now an annual addition, with this year's version representing the third time around for a rundown of practically every sportbike available in the coming year. Here you'll find offerings ranging from supermoto to sport-touring from each manufacturer, with basic specifications and a short description for each model. After a trying year in '10 for the industry, things are looking up for the new year as practically every manufacturer has at least one all-new or significantly updated model. This year does represent a first for the buyer's guide: We've included electric bikes from three manufacturers. The Intermot (Cologne, Germany) and EICMA (Milan, Italy) shows - where many new models are introduced - were in progress as we put the guide together, and some manufacturers are reluctant to release information prior to one or both shows. Our spies on the ground ferreted out what they could for the new 2011 bikes, but keep an eye on www.sportrider.com for last-minute changes or additions.
How To Read The Capsules
Manufacturers are presented alphabetically, and models within each manufacturer's section are listed in decreasing order of price. Similar models, such as ABS and non-ABS versions of the same bike, share one capsule in many cases. The price listed represents MSRP for the base model; paint schemes and options sometimes shown in the accompanying picture may add a premium to the base price, although we've tried to point this out in the description if that's the case. Check with the manufacturer (a listing and contact information is at the end of the guide) for up-to-date pricing and options. The specifications list engine type, seat height in inches and wheelbase in inches. The engine spec can be deciphered as follows: listed first is cooling type (L-C is liquid cooled, A-C is air cooled); next is total number of valves in the engine (16V for example), then displacement in cubic centimeters; finally, the layout of the cylinders (Inline-four, V-twin, etc). Following the capsules, you'll find a list of discontinued models from each manufacturer.

The company's long-running naked bike is updated for '11, but we don't have much more information than that. Our best guess is the R model will have the double-overhead-cam, dual-plug, radial-valve engine and drivetrain from the GS and RT models, which increases output to 110 horsepower and maximum engine speed to 8500 rpm.

"The twisties are yours to devour anywhere in the country," says BMW about the touring version of the F800. Accessories include heated grips, ABS, Tire Pressure Monitor, onboard computer, alarm system, center stand and seat/suspension options that combined can lower the seat height by more than two inches.

New to the USA for '11, the middleweight R model combines the best of the GS and ST models and has met great success already overseas. This all-new electric bike combines a 40kW electric motor capable of almost 60 ft-lb of torque with proprietary lithium-ion batteries in three versions. The 6.0 model has a claimed range of 60 miles, while the 8.0 and 10.0 have ranges of 80 and 100 miles respectively. Performance? All models will "exceed 100 mph for sustained periods."

Ducati is streamlining its supersport lineup this year, with both the 1198R and 1198S being replaced by the 1198SP. The new SP inherits features from each, including Öhlins suspension (with a TTX rear shock), Ducati Traction Control and Data Analyzer, plus the new Ducati Quick Shifter, a slipper clutch, aluminum fuel tank, and Brembo monobloc calipers.

The new generation Multistrada 1200 changed the adventure-tourer landscape with its ground-breaking electronics package. Ducati's super-serious naked bike returns basically unchanged for '11, with the same beefy engine, more relaxed steering geometry, and longer swingarm adding up to one of the more satisfying machines in the class. The Öhlins-suspension-equipped S version gets red with red frame or diamond black with racing black frame color schemes, both with black radiator guards and wheels.

** The Hypermotard 1100 EVO and 1100 EVO SP return basically unchanged for '11, with the same upgraded electronics (and higher state of tune engine in the SP model) enhancing the Ducati supermoto experience on a tight and twisty road. The SP also boasts higher ground clearance, better suspension, higher bars and less weight.

The middleweight Hypermotard returns for '11 unchanged, but that includes its $9995 price tag from last year. With a lower seat height than the 1100 models in addition to the APTC wet clutch from the Monster 696, the Hypermotard 796 encapsulates all the fun of its bigger stablemates with a friendlier engine and price tag.
Ducati 848 EVO/Dark $12,995/11,995

The middleweight 848 gains some power with engine upgrades that boost its output to a claimed 140 crankshaft horsepower, a steering damper, and Brembo monobloc brakes to become the 848 EVO. A "Dark" version in all-flat-black motif is also available for $1000 less than the Arctic White or Ducati Red edition.
Ducati Monster 1100 $11,995

Ducati's iconic Monster 1100 lineup also got the streamlining treatment, with the Öhlins-equipped 1100S dropped, and ABS now being included as standard equipment (thereby deleting the ABS versions of each model) - yet the list price is the same as last year. Everything else is basically the same, with red, silver, or black color schemes available.
Ducati Monster 696 DARK/696 ABS/796 ABS $8495/8995/9995

The entry-level Monster 696 was joined by the early-'11-release 796 midyear. Revisions for '11 include a Marzocchi fork on both bikes (replacing the Showa unit), plus 20mm higher bars, a new seat shape and rear subframe, and new matte black or white color schemes for the 696. The Monster 796 gains ABS as standard equipment, with the same price tag as before.
Harley-Davidson XR1200X $ 11,799

What the heck is a Harley-Davidson doing in Sport Rider? We've even got one to race one in the AMA's Vance & Hines XR1200 series this year! Yikes!
Honda VFR1200F /DCT $NA

This VFR is packed with technology, from its compact Unicam-design V-four engine with ride-by-wire throttle to the Combined ABS braking system and offset-pivot driveshaft. The Dual Clutch Transmission model adds paddle shifting or two fully automatic modes, a first for production sportbikes.
Honda CBR600RR /ABS $NA

Sometimes the PR folks get it exactly right: The middleweight CBR "offers a near-magical combination of light weight, free-revving power, compliant suspension and all in a package that's sized just right." Honda VFR800X $NA

As we went to press, Honda had released two teaser sketches of a new "crossover" model that straddles the adventure-touring and street segments. Using a middleweight V-4 engine and a heads-up "floating" instrument panel, the new bike is claimed to have an adventure-inspired design combined with an upright riding position.

One of our favorite bikes on the racetrack, the big CBR posted the quickest lap time in our '10 four-cylinder literbike comparison test and was the lightest bike in the class. Why mess with that? New colors for '11 include red/black, black and a Repsol Edition, while all models will have silver frames and swingarms.
Honda NT700V /ABS $NA

Little brother to the ST1300, the NT is "plenty nimble to eat up around-town urban assaults, and plenty plush and feature-packed for the luxurious long haul." Integrated saddlebags and adjustable windscreen are standard while a boatload of accessories is available, including a wind deflector set, Combined ABS, a rear trunk, and heated grips.
Hyosung GT650R $NA

Hyosung had not released its 2011 models as we went to press, but our source at the company indicated that the model range would be very similar to 2010. That includes the GT650R, which features adjustable suspension, an inverted fork and oval-tube frame matched with the company's fuel injected V-twin engine.

Hyosung calls the GT250R the "first modern 250 sportbike in twenty years," and you could easily mistake the GT250R for its big brother as they share many features, such as four valves per cylinder, electronic fuel injection, an inverted front fork, adjustable rearsets for comfort and optional two-tone paint (that does add a premium).
Hyosung GT650 $NA

The naked GT650 is nearly identical to the R model but with much less bodywork and a less aggressive riding position - the company calls it the best of both worlds. Updates last year included the blacked-out engine, four-piston front brake calipers and an immobilizer system. We're anxious to see what the company has in store for 2011.
Hyosung GT250 $NA

Just like the 650 models, the GT250 is almost identical to the R model but for bodywork and the upright riding position - which was revised for '10 through new handlebars and seat design. Note that the GT250 has just a single front disc as opposed to the R model's two. Expect color options for all the Hyosung models to be changed for '11.
Kawasaki CONCOURS 14 /ABS $14,599/15,599

The big Connie was heavily updated last year with traction control, revised bodywork, a new linked ABS on that optional model, standard heated grips, improved mirrors, bodywork, and windscreen, an "economy assist" fueling mode, new suspension settings, and redesigned Bridgestone BT-021 tires. All this returns unchanged for '11.
Kawasaki ZX-10R /ABS $=13,799/14,799

Completely redesigned for '11, the new ZX-10R sports Kawasaki's S-KTRC traction control system, claimed to be motorcycling's most advanced traction control system, with predictive ability that enables it to maintain acceleration better than other setups. The ABS on that model is said to be just as advanced. About the only aspect that returns unchanged is the engine's bore and stroke.

With the increased performance of today's literbikes, some are saying that the hyperbike is dead - we beg to differ, offering the ZX-14 as proof. Available in either all black or Candy Lime Green/Ebony paint schemes
Kawasaki ZX-6R $10,699

Having steamrolled the competition with its monstrously strong engine for two straight years, Kawasaki decided there was no reason to mess with success, so the ZX-6R remains unchanged since its '09 revision. Don't think the 6R is all about its engine, though; the chassis and suspension (with Showa Big Piston Fork) are complemented by the best brakes in the class.
Kawasaki Versys $7699

Enthusiasts' confusion on what to make of the Versys is largely forgotten once they discover its amazing versatility and surprising performance that come at a very economical price. Upgraded suspension and other bits such as a larger fuel tank and adjustable windscreen allow the Versys to fill more roles than the Ninja 650R from which it is based.

Take the superb Z1000 naked bike introduced last year, give it an advanced full fairing, three-position adjustable-rake windscreen, subtly revised but still comfy and non-supersport-committed ergos, and what do you get? The new Kawasaki Ninja 1000, quite possibly the do-it-all sportbike that many American enthusiasts have been pining for since the '80s.

Kawasaki's new-for-2010 liter-size streetfighter returns for '11 basically unchanged save for only being available in all black or Candy Lime Green/Ebony paint motifs, but we're not complaining. The versatile Z1000 combines excellent all-around performance without the idiosyncratic commitment of its more serious European brethren, and at a price that only adds to its appeal
Kawasaki Ninja 650R $7199

Kawasaki's 649cc vertical twin made its debut with the Ninja 650R, a bike that advanced the state of the "economical sportbike" category tenfold. Receiving more than 40 updates in '09 (including Sportier bodywork, and revised suspension and fuel injection settings), the 650R is one of those rare sportbikes that appeals to both novice and experienced rider alike.
Kawasaki Ninja 250R $3999 - 4299

When gasoline prices were spiraling out of control back in '09, Ninja 250Rs were flying out of Kawasaki dealerships faster than Japan could produce them. While fuel prices have calmed down, demand for the Ninjette hasn't; with its surprising performance, low price, gas-sipping engine, and easy-to-handle size, the 250R still remains a desirable motorcycle for many.
KTM 1190 RC8 $NA

The standard RC8 is not much of a step down from the R model, with top-shelf components from Brembo, Marchesini, Pirelli and WP. Ergonomics are completely adjustable, while the license plate bracket, passenger pegs and seat, and mirrors all quickly detach, so you can enjoy this bike on the street or track.
KTM 990 Super Duke $NA

You'd better have a good hold on your license if you plan on obtaining a Super Duke. The peppy engine and nimble chassis will tempt you into all kinds of trouble. That said, the biggest Duke model is comfortable and surprisingly polished, and it's been one of our favorite naked bikes since its introduction in '07.
KTM 1190 RC8 R $NA

This up-spec version of the RC8 has more displacement than the standard model, higher compression and a claimed 15 more horsepower, while chassis bits include forged Marchesini wheels and WP suspension. A host of KTM's Powerparts let you go even further - an Akrapovic exhaust system and even a Superstock engine kit are available.
KTM 990 Supermoto R/T $NA

The adventure version of the Super Duke, the Supermoto R offers many road-oriented upscale features such as Brembo brakes, WP suspension and Marchesini wheels. The T model is outfitted for travelling, with soft bags and a carrier system as standard, a larger fuel tank, more elaborate fairing, handguards and an immobilizer system.

With a claimed 65 horsepower on tap from its LC4 engine, KTM may be right by labeling the original Duke as "the ultimate single-cylinder naked bike." Highlights include Brembo brakes, WP suspension, a one-piece die-cast aluminum swingarm that is absolutely gorgeous, a high-quality tapered aluminum handlebar and an "anti-hopping" clutch.
KTM 690 SMC $NA

The Supermoto version of the single-cylinder Duke features the same LC4 engine and Electronic Power Throttle, but couples it with longer-travel WP suspension and patented tubeless spoke rims. The wheels are still of the 17-inch variety, however, so count on great on-road performance to go along with the off-road look.

Moto Guzzi STELVIO /ABS $NA

Named after Moto Guzzi's test road, this adventure model has the latest incarnation of the "Quattrovalvole" engine along with features such as an adjustable windscreen and saddle, a glove-box that can be unlocked from the handlebar. Moto Guzzi GRISO 8V $NA

It may look like a cruiser but don't be fooled: The Griso is one of the most powerful Guzzi models ever, thanks to its eight-valve "Ottovalvole" engine. Another model that was completely revamped for last year, the 1090RR is "a prestigious, naked motorcycle with fascinating design, power and speed." The larger of the two Brutale models sports adjustable traction control, adjustable footrests, forged aluminum wheels, a slipper clutch, a steering damper and higher-spec brakes and suspension.
MV Agusta F3 $NA
Engine L-C 12V 675 Inline Triple | SeatNA | Wheelbase NA
This middleweight model has been rumored for several years, but should be released as a 2012 model later this year and measure 675cc. Official photos show many similarities to the F4 model such as Brembo brakes and a single-sided swingarm, but differences include a standard-mount exhaust rather than the signature underseat unit.

A slightly more docile version of the Brutale, the 990R makes do with slightly less displacement and power compared with the 1090RR but also benefitted from last year's major makeover to both Brutale models, including adjustable traction control. Corse accessories for the naked line include a number of magnesium, titanium and carbon fiber parts.

The entry-level electric eSuperSport machine is powered by a 48-horsepower motor combined with a 5.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, while the eSuperBike has two motors (for 96 horsepower) and a 7.7 kWh battery pack. Upscale running gear on the eSuperBike includes Brembo front calipers and an Öhlins rear shock.

Powered by a supercharged version of the Harley-Davidson Revolution engine (think V-Rod) that's mounted in a unique chromoly/aluminum modular frame, the 1250sc is 180 horsepower of raw sportbike. Top-drawer running gear includes Brembo radial-mount front brakes, Öhlins suspension and Marchesini forged aluminum wheels.

The big bruiser continues for 2011 unchanged since its major redesign in '09 - which is not a problem as the VMax has always had plenty of everything. The '11 model comes in Granite Gray and is part of Star's Priority Delivery Program, so you'll have to reserve yours by placing a deposit at your local dealer.
Suzuki Hayabusa $13,699

Even though it last had a makeover in '08, the Hayabusa lasted almost a decade before that revamp, so it's obvious why the bike is still a favorite with the drag and custom crowds: its reputation as the king of quick hasn't faded one bit. And that history has created a strong aftermarket with a myriad number of hop-up parts to make the 'Busa even faster and more powerful.
Suzuki GSX-R750 $11,999

Along with the GSX-R600, the GSX-R750 received an extensive revamp for '11. The lone surviving 750 in the supersport category underwent both an extensive weight loss program (cutting a claimed 20 pounds) in addition to a plethora of internal engine changes aimed at reducing internal frictional losses and boosting midrange power and acceleration.

Take the discontinued Bandit 1250 engine and chassis, and dress it up with a full fairing, ABS as standard equipment, twin radiator cooling fans, and a centerstand, and you have the new GSX1250FA. Already introduced to European roads this past year, the GSX1250FA is a bike that's as comfortable eating up major miles or commuting through city traffic as it is carving canyons.

After a thorough revision in '09, American Suzuki didn't import any '10 models, so the return of the liter-size GSX-R unchanged for '11 save for different paint seems like the usual two-year development cycle. The 999cc four-cylinder was given even more power in '09, with a redesigned chassis utilizing a 43mm Showa Big Piston fork to help harness that beefier engine.

As with the GSX-R750, the new '11 model 600 also underwent a major makeover, with a very similar weight loss regimen resulting in a similar 20-pound weight loss. Besides the internal engine changes and less weight, both bikes also received upgrades such as Showa Big Piston Forks and Brembo calipers to round out their improved acceleration.
Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS $8099

The 650-engined V-Strom outlived its 1000cc brother by being lighter, more agile and economical, and possessing a near-six-gallon fuel tank that allows well over 200 miles between fill-ups. The V-Strom was Suzuki's attempt to explore the now-popular adventure-tour genre, and it's even more relevant now. Add the accessory hard bags and you've got a great do-it-all machine.

Triumph says the Tiger is "equally at home in the urban jungle as it is prowling on the open road." We'll agree, as you can't go wrong with the company's 1050cc triple nor the tall riding position. A wide range of official accessories (including optional ABS) lets you tailor the Tiger to your needs; SE version adds ABS, hardbags and handguards as standard.

The bike that invented the streetfighter segment back in '94 gets a makeover for '11, with new angular headlights and a revised frame and swingarm that repositions the weight further forward for better handling. Minor internal engine and exhaust changes boost power slightly as well, with a claimed eight percent increase in torque.

Both versions of the naked triple are in the 2011 lineup, and both combine the Daytona 675's stellar engine with an upright riding position for loads of fun as well as performance. The base model makes do with nonadjustable suspension and lower-spec brakes, while the R version boasts running gear lifted right from the Daytona 675 for an even wilder ride.

An evolution of the Sprint ST, this new model leans more toward the touring end of the sport-touring spectrum, with 31-liter hard bags, standard ABS, upgraded suspension, newly styled and better-performing headlights and an optional top box. A standard-mount exhaust (replacing the ST's underseat unit) makes more room for luggage.

Subtly updated last year, the Daytona 675 bucks the middleweight trend with its sweet-sounding and torquey three-cylinder engine and continues to be a threat to the Japanese four-cylinder machinery. The limited edition SE model returns for 2011 as well, with its Pearl White bodywork and Sparkle Blue frame and swingarm distinguishing it from the standard model.

Yamaha WR250X $6590

Yamaha claims the WR250X is not exactly an enduro, a supermoto or a sportbike. We claim its loads of fun, from its 17-inch sticky tires to its 250cc four-stroke engine and YZ/WR250-inspired chassis. With all the emphasis on green, check this out: The spec sheet lists fuel economy at 71 mpg. Take that, electric bikes!
Sportbike Buyer's Guide Resources
Here we have listed bikes that didn't make the grade for the '11 lineup. Not included are models that have been replaced with a new or updated model, such as the BMW K1300GT makes way for the K1600GT, or the Ducati 1198SP replaces both the S and R models. Note that Benelli is completely absent from this year's guide; the company was in flux as we went to press, with no news from the company about what models will be available this year. Finally, just because a model has been discontinued doesn't mean it won't be built anymore, or that you can't get one. For instance, in Suzuki's case, the majority of its "discontinued" models just have overstock that needs to be sold off (cheap) before the company can import new year models.
