Triumph has launched all-new Daytona 675 and 675R models for 2013, which feature new engines with more power and an extended rpm range, and lighter chassis with improved weight distribution. A new, switchable ABS is standard on the R model and available as an option on the base 675.
The engine has more oversquare cylinder dimensions, with bore and stroke now measuring 76.0 x 49.6mm compared with the old model's 74.0 x 52.3mm dimensions. The cylinder block is now separate from the crankcase and has ceramic-coated aluminum bores, which enables the assembly to be stronger and better able to cope with the increased power; previously, individual liners were assembled into the upper crankcase half. Twin injectors per cylinder are now used, and a "slip-assist clutch" reduces lever effort and helps prevent rear wheel hop under braking; . Peak power is claimed to be increased by two horsepower, with the peak now earlier in the rev range at 12,600 rpm, while the rev limit has been raised to 14,400 rpm.
The frame is now assembled from fewer sections; the wheelbase has been shortened by 20mm to 1375mm, while rake has been steepened from 24 degrees to 23 degrees and trail slightly decreased. Weight distribution has been altered, in part through the use of an underengine exhaust system replacing the previous model's signature underseat unit. Claimed weight has decreased by just over three pounds.
Updated suspension on the standard Daytona 675 includes the latest fixed cartridge KYB fork and a revised rear shock. The R model, as before, is fitted with an Ohlins NIX30 fork and TTX shock.
MSRP for the 2013 Daytona 675 is set at $11,599, and for the 2013 Daytona 675R at $13,499.
Triumph's press information follows:
- Brand new, higher-powered triple engine with 128PS (+3PS) and 75Nm (+2Nm) of torque and an increased 14,400rpm red line
- New, lighter chassis with improved weight distribution and re-positioned exhaust
- New, switchable ABS system with track mode and slip-assist clutch as standard
- R version with race-inspired components and quickshifter as standard
Triumph Motorcycles has confirmed the launch of its all-new Daytona 675 and Daytona 675R models at the EICMA Motorcycle Show (Milan, 12-15 November, 2012). With striking looks and improved performance, the latest incarnations of the successful Daytona platform once again set the benchmark for the supersport class.
The all new Daytona 675 and Daytona 675R features a brand new engine and frame, fresh and sophisticated new bodywork and a host of other enhancements which have been built on everything Triumph has learned from the enormously successful outgoing model. The result is a bike which is 1.5kg lighter than the old model, with more power, an extended rev range, greater precision, feel and increased agility. The new Daytona is faster on the track, better on the road and even more satisfying to own.
At the heart of the 2013 Daytona is its new engine, which brings more performance and a subtly new character too. The new model’s power is up 3PS to 128PS (126bhp, 94.2kW), peaking earlier at 12,600rpm and revving on for longer (14,400rpm). Another improvement is the bike’s maximum torque, which is 2Nm higher at 75Nm (55.3lb.ft, 7.63kgm), achieved in part by new twin injectors per cylinder and changes to the intake system. An added bonus of these improvements is an increase in the quality and volume of the signature three-cylinder snarling intake roar for the rider.
The exhaust system is a clear change, as the compact and purposeful new unit now sits beneath the engine rather than below the rear seat. This is a consequence of the mission by Triumph's engineers to centralise the bike's mass as much as possible and move the weight forward - a key ingredient for making the new Daytona even more agile and yet more stable at speed too.
The transmission features a new slip-assist clutch to provide a lighter lever action and help prevent rear wheel hop under heavy braking. This is aided by the engine management system, which opens the throttle butterflies to reduce engine braking.
As well as incorporating the new, innovative intake duct, the frame uses fewer sections in its construction for a cleaner, stronger design and has sharper geometry and a shorter wheelbase to make full use of the revised weight distribution. The rear subframe, constructed from high pressure die-cast aluminium, not only looks fantastic but contributes to the sharp design at the rear of the bike.
The suspension is new and includes the latest fixed cartridge forks from KYB (formerly Kayaba) and revised rear shock. High performance Pirelli Supercorsa tyres are fitted as standard. The bike’s ergonomics are altered slightly, with a 10mm reduction in seat height and a little less weight placed on the wrists, but the riding position is still designed for the best control at high speed and on the track. New lightweight wheels provide lower inertia, which assists the speed of turn and the speed of acceleration, all adding up to a more involved ride.
The new bodywork has a sharper, leaner look that also reflects the higher quality of the new bike. Features such as the deliberately split upper fairing side add sophistication, while the attention to detail has moved to a new level and includes a highly attractive upper yoke, a revised cockpit area and quickly detachable number plate/tail-light unit for easy track-day conversion.
The comprehensive LCD multi-functional instrument pack features digital speedometer, fuel gauge, trip computer, analogue tachometer, lap timer, gear position indicator, programmable gear change lights and a clock. For added security, an electronic immobiliser is included as standard.
Daytona 675R
The R version of the Daytona 675 pushes performance and rider experience boundaries even further with its list of additional high specification components including:
- Öhlins suspension (TTX rear shock and NIX30 inverted forks) for a wider range of adjustability, improved response and a firmer base set up.
- The latest, lighter Brembo monobloc calipers for precise and powerful stopping.
- Switchable ABS as standard, to suit conditions, riding environments and rider preference.
- A quick-shift gear change, improved with new software for 2013.
- Stunning carbon fibre cockpit infill panels and a carbon fibre rear hugger.
- A unique colour scheme with red rear subframe and red wheel pinstripes.
Accessories and warranty
A wide range of factory accessories are available for the Daytona 675 and Daytona 675R designed to enhance both the style and the function of the bikes. The carefully designed engine, swingarm and frame protectors improve the looks as well as reducing component vulnerability and there is a selection of CNC-machined components including brake levers and reservoirs, coloured dipsticks and oil filler caps. An approved aftermarket Arrow silencer is available along with an alarm, light luggage and LED indicators. The quick-shift gear change can be added as an option to the stock Daytona 675.
