We've had a lot of questions raised about the variance between our two Honda CBR1000RR dyno runs. Our first run, posted on Jan. 19 (2004 Honda CBR1000RR on the Dyno ) showed a peak reading of 153.5 HP. Our group dyno on March 11 (2004 Open Bikes on the Dyno ) gave a peak reading of 149.1 HP, a significant difference.
Savvy readers will know that dynoing even the same bike on different days will net different results, and the CBR1000RR we have for our test is not the same bike we had earlier. One important difference between the two bikes is the tires each came equipped with. The first bike, which we had only for a few days, had Pirelli Diablo Corsas fitted; the second, our actual test bike had Bridgestone BT-014s. Both tires are OEM fitment for the CBR1000.
Other testing we have conducted has shown that dyno readings can vary as much as 3 percent with two different tires on the same bike. Our next issue's Art & Science shows exactly how tires, and other variables such as tire pressure and gearing, can affect dyno runs. Look for the giant, 14-page literbike comparison test in the next issue of Sport Rider.
