Addressing the growing ranks of female sportbike riders, Sidi's Vertigo Lei (Italian for "she") boots boast all the protective features of the standard Vertigo boot, but with tailoring and fit from a woman's foot mold-not just a downsized men's mold. Constructed mainly from Lorica, the Vertigo Lei sports Sidi's exclusive composite inner and dual-compound outer sole for durability and support. Protective features include the patented Vertebra System that protects the rider's Achilles' tendon area, the three-stage shock-absorbing heel cup, and replaceable nylon shin and thermoplastic ankle protective plates. Fit and comfort is ensured by the Tecno VR adjustable calf system (designed to accommodate and support almost any calf size), a removable inner arch support, perforated Teflon-treated inner liner, an adjustable air vent, and an elastic panel adjacent to the zipper that allows a bind-free zip over the ankle bone and improved fit in that area. The toe shift protector is made from DuPont Techno-polymers for durability and performance in all conditions, and the plastic toe sliders are adjustable and replaceable as well.
SR managing editor April Trestick recently got a pair of the Vertigo Leis, and was very impressed by their overall quality and performance. "As far as I can tell, they are the highest quality women-specific track boots on the market," she raved. "They are simply the best boots I have ridden in. I've done a few thousand miles with them-commuting, canyon, track and most recently a 500-mile jaunt around California's central coast. After a break-in period, they have been comfortable and confidence-inspiring." The Sidi's protective features haven't been lost on her, either. "Over the years I've broken stray bones in my feet, so I pay attention to the protective features in my boots. This is probably why I wear [the Vertigo Leis] everywhere even when a sport-touring boot might be more comfortable."
She greatly appreciated the excellent overall fit. "I'm lucky enough to be a fairly average shoe size, so I'm able to wear men's boots. However, the Sidi Vertigo Lei's women's specific fit really is that much better. Unlike other men's boots that I have worn, they don't shift on my heel. The adjustable fit at the calf is also a godsend. I can't imagine going back [to men's boots]." Also approved was the Lei's understated styling. "I really like that Sidi didn't take the easy way out and just splash some pink on their men's boots and call it a day. The design is feminine without screaming, 'hey, chick on a bike.'"
Her only complaint with the Vertigo Lei is that if the boots make direct contact with the skin (she wears her leather or textile pants over her boots), they tend to chafe a bit. The break-in period was also a little extended for her tastes, but she gladly trades that and any more comfort to walk around in for the added durability and protection. "Leather boots with the amount of miles that I have on them would definitely be showing some wear, but my Sidi Vertigo Leis still look brand new."
Enough said, we think. The Sidi Vertigo Lei boots retail for $300, in women's sizes 6.5 to 10.5 (38-43 Euro), and only in black.
