Bancaja Aspar's Nico Terol...
Bancaja Aspar's Nico Terol won the 125cc Grand Prix event at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP when title rival Marc Marquez crashed while leading.
At the same track where he won his first World Championship 125cc Grand Prix race, Bancaja Aspar’s Nico Terol scored his second consecutive victory of the season by taking the victory in the 125cc GP event at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP on Sunday. Avant Mitsubishi Ajo’s Sandro Cortese finished second some 2.2 seconds back, with Pol Espargaro on the Tuenti Racing Aprilia coming in third.
Terol’s victory came at the expense of fellow countryman Marc Marquez, who looked to be running away with the victory in the opening laps as he quickly built up a 2.5-second lead over Terol. Unfortunately, the Aprilia rider (actually, nearly the entire field consists of Aprilias, with the smattering of Derbis actually development Aprilias in disguise, and the odd Lambretta and single Honda) threw it away in turn 10 with 15 laps remaining, and his day only got worse. After picking up his bike and re-entering the race in 14th spot, Marquez knifed his way up to eighth position by the end, only to be penalized 20 seconds by race control for cutting the course after he ran off the track on the last lap; he was demoted to 10th place from the penalty.
In Moto2 action, it was Gresini Racing’s Toni Elias coming out on top of a battle with Mapfre Aspar’s Julian Simon (the reigning 125 GP World Champion, who moved up to the Moto2 class for 2010) for Elias’ third straight victory and fifth of the season. Elias was feeling extremely ill from the flu the night before and wasn’t feeling much better on Sunday, yet the former MotoGP rider was able to churn out the win with a superb outside passing maneuver with six laps remaining that he made stick to the end. Scott Redding followed the leading pair closely for a while, but ended up 4.2 seconds back at the finish. Elias’ victory now gives him a commanding 67-point lead in the championship with seven rounds remaining.

Americans Roger Lee Hayden and Jason DiSalvo had differing fortunes in their Moto2 weekend, with Hayden qualifying 29th and DiSalvo 27th on Saturday. Hayden was then caught up in a first lap crash involving seven other riders that brought out the red flag, and his American Honda/Erion Racing team almost didn’t get his bike back together for the restart (in fact, a minor controversy nearly erupted when race control initially ruled that Hayden and another rider did not get their bikes back to the pit box in the five-minute minimum required; the problem was that Hayden was prevented from attempting to ride his bike back to the pits due to a broken right clip-on, so he was forced to push his bike back to the pit box through the vendor’s row area inside the track. Some intervention by Kevin Schwantz managed to get that ruling overturned and Hayden back on the grid). In the race, DiSalvo began a march from 24th on the first lap to an eventual hard-earned ninth place at the finish; meanwhile, Hayden continued to struggle with suspension issues that left him in 17th place.
