A 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600 master cylinder
Suzuki Motor of America has recalled certain model years of GSX-R600, 750 and 1000 motorcycles for corrosion of the brake piston inside the front master cylinder. The corrosion may result in a reduction of fluid pressure in the braking system, and the resulting loss of braking power may increase the risk of a crash. The affected units cover 2004-2013 GSX-R600 and GSX-R750 models, and 2005-2013 GSX-R1000 models
. According to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), Suzuki will notify dealers next week about the recall, and owners beginning November 4, 2013. Dealers will replace the front master cylinder of a recalled bike free of charge.
The NHTSA Defect Notice states that the master cylinder piston on some models may not have uniform surface treatment. If the motorcycle's brake fluid has not been replaced regularly, moisture buildup in the fluid, combined with the non-uniform surface treatment, can lead to corrosion of the piston; this corrosion generates gas. The master cylinder used on the affected models has its reservoir port located on the side of the unit, which may prevent the gas from being adequately purged. This in turn affects braking power by reducing pressure in the system. The replacement master cylinders to be installed in the recall have their reservoir ports located on the top of the unit for better purging of the gas, and also have an improved surface treatment on the piston.
