Here are some Basic Tips to keep you 'New Riders' Riding Safely into Winter (or until the Ice and Snow stop us 'Die Hards'). First: Slow Down! Take a bit off the Top Speed when the roads are wet, or cold. Good Tires will grip in just about any condition (short of gravel), although if the road surface is wet/cold, your tires will stay cooler than during Summer Riding, offering less control, and grip. As well, some Tires take more time to 'Warm' (2-4 mins), so take it easy for the first few minutes of the ride. Check your Tire Pressure often as well, maintaining the Manufactured Recommendations stamped on the Side Walls. Cold Air contracts inside the Tires, reducing the pressure. Lower than Specified PSI will reduce grip, and proformance, as well as tread life. Proper Pressure is checked with the Tires Cold. Second: Allow for greater Safety Distance! Wet Tires and Brakes lengthen your Stopping Distance, in addition to effecting the 'Cages' being driven on the roads around you. Being exposed to the Raw Atmosphere, and being in direct contact with the Road Surface, we 'Riders' have a better sense of the Actual Conditions, where as 'Cage Drivers' are not paying as close attention, and will still be trying to do 70+ mph in the rain, ignoring the fact that they are endangering themselves, and everyone around them, including you. Third: Get some good Riding Gear! Water Proof Riding Gear will make any Winter Ride into a 'pleasure', rather than a 'misery'. Just as in Spring/Summer, proper Gear can save your hide if things get crazy, by proving Armor/Padding. In colder climates, Wind Chill is the aditional killer. Add wet clothes to that, and you will be stiff in very little time, leaving you unable to react quickly in an emergency. Not to mention the fact that you can actually get Hypothermia from Wind Chill Factors, if it gets too cold! Jacket, Pants, Gloves, and Boots are critical for survival, and can be found on 'Craig's List' if you (like me) can't afford the Show Room Prices. Textile works best for staying warm, and dry. Forth: Visibility! Not having a clear view ahead can end a ride in a hurry. Being able to see, and be seen, is even more important in bad weather. Not to promote the product, but rather to share experience, I highly recommend the use of 'Rain-X' on your Visor, in addition to all Lamp Lenses on your Bike. This product causes the water to bead, and even the slightest of winds will pull it away, leaving your Visor clear. Your Lamps will also benefit from this effect, allowing other Drivers to see you better through the rain. Ditch the Tinted Visor, and run a Clear, or Amber. Tinted Visors work great in the Summer Sun, although can be a hazard if the day gets dark, and the sky tears open. Finding you have poor visibility in the middle of a ride is the worst time to do something about it! As well, keep your Helmet Clean, with a good coat of Wax, as this too will help to shed water. Lastly: Your Steed! Most Used Bikes have been ridden in the rain, at some point, or another, during their lives. This does not ruin a Motorcycle- Leaving your Bike exposed to the Elements does. However, some basic precautions can be taken to avoid damage, in the form of Rust, and Corrosion. If you intend to ride in the Rain on a regular basis, plan on taking off the Side Covers, or any other Fairing Works, to gain access to the Wiring Harness. By applying a Dielectric Grease (any Auto Parts Store has this) into the Couplings throughout the Harness, you will keep water from getting in, which will cause Contacts to corrode. The most critical, and more often effected, are the Primay Leads in the Charging System. Don't forget to put some on the Contacts of the Lamp Bulbs! After each ride, upon arriving Home, Towel dry the Bike, making sure to pull as much water off as possible. After the Engine has cooled, shoot a light coat of WD-40 (Water Dispersant) onto the exposed parts of the Frame, the underside of the Exhaust System, and any other areas that would rust. Unless it is Alloy, aim for the inside of the Swing Arm (avoiding the Tire), where the water, and road debris cause the most damage. As well, spray a fine mist over the Brake Rotors, although it is wise to wipe these down promptly with a rag, so as to not comtaminate the Brake Pads. Do Not apply WD-40 to your Chain! It will strip the Oil from within the Links. Use Chain Oil to keep it from rusting. Keeping your Bike clean, and well maintained, will get it through decades of Winter Riding. Wash, and Wax, just as you would in Summer, and maintain a Service Schedule that includes Oil, Coolent, Brake/Clutch Fluid, Chain Oil, and Lamp Bulb/Tire Checks, as per Manufacture Instructions. Keep in mind that most Bikes have different Fluid Requirements for Cold Weather Operations, and that your Chain (if you have one on your Bike) will be striped of its Oil much faster in the rain. As well, old Brake/Clutch Fluid will become cloudy, and unstable in colder conditions, making an already 'Aged' Fluid hazardous. If you don't have a Stable, and are Parking Outside, get a Bike Cover. Dry off as much water as possible with a Towel, before covering the Bike, as the standing water will turn into condensation under the fabric cover, permeating into every part on your Bike, including inside your Air Box! Keep in mind that Riding can be dangerous anytime of year, and the same things that can mean trouble in good weather are worse in bad weather. Take it easy, stay focused, be diligent, and enjoy the ride! Ride Safe! I would really like the tail/back seat to sit more flat than it is right now. I know that sounds a bit anti-sport bike, but with my crotch riding the tank, I was wondering if there was a kit for my bike. In addition, something just of curiousity and speculation, where would be the best place to look to drag out the rear end as well? I'm thinking a 300 would look great on the back sometime down the road. I know that the size of your wheel effects the torque multiplication of your engine (basically what your gear box does). But when you open the excel file to see how they have used that calculation it doesn't make any sense to me. This is what i think it does; 1 - calculates the radius off the circumference (easy) 2 - Then plugs that into a 'magic' formula that has parts not explained. Shift Rpm = "Cross-over" Point (you select from the graph) / ((2 x Pi x Radius) / (12 x (60/5280)) x Gear Ratio x Primary Reduction Ratio x Final Drive Ratio) To simply Shift Rpm = C/O Point / ((Circumference / 12 x (60/5820)) * Total Gear ratios) where did the 12 x (60/5820) come from???? I'm assuming the 60 has got to do with revolutions per minute?? My estimate is that (Circumference / 12 x (60/5820) converts a wheel size to a multiplication ratio for the torque out of the engine, but what is it a ratio in comparison of (gear ratios are in the form 1st gear - 3.125:1 but we only write them as 1st gear - 3.125) any help at all would be greatly appreciated as i'm building a car version of the same thing. The only difference being it estimates your torque curve based on peak kW & pear torque (not entirely accurate i know, but if you havn't got a dyno graph it's as close as you can get mathematically). My version will have the option to edit the estimated torque curve values if you have a dyno graph of your engine however. cheers ike

I love the "look" and lightweight properties of this material, but after I commited to the purchase I began to have some doubts about the long-term durability of this muffler construction. I'm pretty sure the carbon fibers themselves can stand-up to the exhaust heat just fine, but it's the heat-resistive capabilites of the supporting resin matrix that concerns me. Just wondering if anyone out there is willing to provide me with some feedback regarding their sucess (or failure!) in using carbon fiber canister mufflers, I intend to keep this bike a very long time so I want this muffler to last. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.
