I remember reading a tip about riding on unfamiliar roads, where you watch the white edge paint stripes on the road. If the stripes converge, then the corner is tightening up. If the stripes open up, then the radius is increasing, and its a good time to gas it. This kind of gives a baseline corner judgement, when you add in line selection, road conditions, potential for gravel,etc, to decide a safe speed.

Sport Rider jacket showcase came at the perfect time for picking out a new mesh summer jacket. I am interested in the RS Taichi armored mesh jacket because of the chest protector, and decent protection , for a mesh type jacket. Anyone with sizing tips, or experience with this jacket? My other choice would be a mesh Alpinestar, which I can actually see, and try on ,at a local cycle shop (but mailorder a chest protector upgrade).

REALLY loving the looks and feel of the Ninja 1000 ABS for my first street bike. I get mixed comments between too much torque for a newbie and to consider going to the 650. What are all of your thoughts? I don't want to out grow one bike only to purchase another one this late in life (over 50), but don't want to have to worry about the thing bucking me off either. LOL!!

I started riding when I was 20 and did everything as by-the-book as possible. I took a beginner's riding course, bought good safety gear, and after passing my licensing tests with flying colors I enjoyed three seasons of motoring around on my very old, very sedate 600cc that my father (an experienced rider himself) picked out as an ideal starter bike for me. On this bike I learned how to handle a big, tall bike but the power was still safely manageable for me as a beginner. After I had a couple years of riding experience on my bike, a friend let me try out his gixxer and I loved it. I started thinking about maybe upgrading my bike to a modern 600cc. Then life got in the way and with both work and school I no longer had the time or money to devote to riding. It sucked, but I thought to myself that there's always next year. One year turned to several. I'm finally able to get back into riding this season. Hooray, right? Except that when I brought my bike to an empty parking lot to practice, I found that my skills have gotten very rusty, and my confidence is totally shot. The skills and techniques I had trained to become instinctive don't come naturally anymore. I'm actually scared of my bike now. I've always been a very careful rider, but I don't recall ever feeling afraid of my bike. I just remember having the time of my life. I rode my bike everywhere, to work, to run errands, with my friends and my dad... it was awesome. I guess I was expecting it to be awesome again, and I'm crushed to find out that it isn't. It feels like I'm starting over again as a total beginner. I can't go anywhere on the bike until I feel safe doing so, and it kills me. Has anyone experienced this? Is this normal? I would appreciate any thoughts or advice.

I love my 2001 GSXR 600 except for it's rearend. Actually I've never liked the rearend/tail section of the 2003 and older models. It just doesn't seem to flow like the 2004 and newer models. Any suggestions on how to transform my bikes backside into a 2004 and later look?

I've been riding motorcycles for many years with the bear-bones protection, leather jacket, helmet and gloves. After a bad spill a few years ago that did damage to my left arm, I got a jacket with elbow and shoulder armor. As I am getting older, I'd like to step up to something more protective. I would like to find upper-body armor that fits under an existing leather jacket. Icon armor seems to have a good reputation, but have found Bohn body armor and Alpinestars on the internet. I don't have any shops near me that stock body armor, so it looks like I have to shop on-line. I want something with chest and back protection. There are thousands of products on the internet ranging in prices from $30-$40 for full body armor to $300 for what looks like the same gear. The only standard I've seen is a European CE rating. What is your experience with armor protection, and are the myriad cheap armor outfits any good.

I have a Suomy Spec 1-R helmet that is in great shape, though it's more than 7 years old. I know you're supposed to replace your helmet every 5 years or so, but I only wore this helmet for one season, and for the past 6 years it has been sitting in a dark, dry closet in its helmet bag. I know that the plastic, foam, glue, resin, etc. in the helmet can still deteriorate over time without being exposed to tons of sweat and sunlight, but surely at a much slower rate? Maybe my helmet is actually in similar condition to a helmet that is just 3 or 4 years old? I would really hate to have this helmet go to waste, and have to shell out several hundred dollars for a new helmet of similar quality. Would you still wear this helmet if you were in my shoes, or would you bite the bullet and get a new one? Thank you, I appreciate your opinions.

We constantly read what is the fastsest and quickest lap times, but for most like me that love to ride/commute and enjoy the nirvana of track days, but have no desire to be the fastest on the track or ever compete we are lacking, compounded by little chance of test riding a new bike. Again, the emphasis is on fun not fast. At the same time being blown off the track on your light 250 by a liter bike is not tons of fun either. Been riding 45 years, 60 y/o and ride a '99 R6 with nice mods. Thinking of '12-'13 Touno, S1000RR, Daytona 675R. I'm 70/30 street/track and live in Mendocino Co. and my track is Thunderhill where a good time for me is 2:20. Really appreciate the feedback!!

It doesn't sound like you are very good at this. Why in the world would you buy a bike to resale when you really don't even know what you are buying? Second, buying without a title is not smart. Did you even runb the vin to check the history before you bought it? As far as value, it is worth what the market will pay. To me, it doesn't sound like there is any money to be made on that.

As far as I'm concerned, Schwantz can do no wrong. In retirement he is an amabassador for the sport. I took his two day class at Barber and was able to talk an dine and ride with him and I met his parents too; great BBQ cooks, BTW. Wonderful people. He doesn't have to teach people like me but he does it out of love for the sport. His dedication to Texas is real too. The man gives because it makes him feel good. That trait, unfortunately, makes him a mark. That's how I read it.

Kento: What PSI settings did you use for both bikes in the tire tests? I posted personal feedback from owning a ZX14R directly with the article itself. I ask because tuning PSI to suit my particular needs made a huge difference in traction along with dialing in suspension versus OEM settings for me. Lastly, know that I used your suspension settings for the 2006 original ZX14 road test as a baseline when I owned a 2007 ZX14 prior to the current '12 14R I have. Having that initial info 5 years ago, made setting up the '07 alot easier. For the record, my set up then and now is a bit stiffer than you like and more preload works for my weight, but without that base info, it would have taken alot longer to dial it in.The 14R has been even easier since '12 OEM package is better and I had settings from the '07 as my baseline for that improved package. All about the set up and PSI that works for how you ride and your climate. Well done,
