A total “ground-up redesign” of the original Speedmaster boot has resulted in the new Speedmaster 3.0 boot from Joe Rocket. Utilizing a split-grain leather construction for breathability, the new boot features an articulated and reinforced ankle design for protection with mobility, along with injection-molded resin shin, heel, and ankle armor (including a reinforced titanium ankle plate), and foam cushioning used throughout the interior. The magnesium toe sliders are replaceable, with additional magnesium sliders on the calf and heel.
The side-entry zipper has a Velcro-fastened flap and a ratcheting buckle up top to ensure a good fit, and the top lip has a gaiter to keep out road debris. A thermoplastic polyurethane midsole is reinforced with a steel shank to provide the right combination of flexibility and stiffness, with an antibacterial footbed helping to keep things from getting smelly.
We found the Speedmaster 3.0 boots to indeed be quite comfy, with no chafing or uncomfortable rubbing up against hard parts in either a riding position or while walking through the pits. Speaking of the side-entry zipper, the Joe Rocket boots also feature an expansion panel in the ankle that eases getting the zipper over that area. Footpeg feel was excellent and there is good flexibility, yet the boots retain a substantial and protective overall impression on your legs, ankles, and feet. No “shifter toe” was suffered during numerous track sessions, and the toe sliders seemed to hold up well to abuse.
About the only gripe we have with the Speedmaster 3.0 boots is that they’re only available in black.
