Iconic British sports car manufacturer Lotus announced plans to build “its own and first-ever motorcycle” via its newly formed Lotus Motorcycles subsidiary. Named the Lotus C-01, the bike will be a joint project of German auto racing team Kodewa (who field the factory-backed Lotus LMP2 team in the FIA World Endurance Championship), the Holzer Group (a German manufacturing conglomerate), and former Bugatti and Volkswagen designer Daniel Simon. The company press release states that the C-01 will be a “hyper-bike with integrated racing technology…manufactured of materials like carbon, titanium and aerospace quality steel, which are also used in Formula 1.”
Interestingly, the company statement professes that, “Safety, ergonomics and design are the most important factors the design team has put emphasis on,” but in the following sentence boast that it will be a “state-of-the-art motorbike powered by an approximately 200 horsepower engine.” It appears that engineering will be handled by the Kodewa team of experts, with the manufacturing of various parts by various companies within the Holzer Group. Simon was responsible for penning numerous Hollywood movie concept machines, including the “Lightcycle” from the 2010 Disney motion picture “Tron”, and the “Bubbleship” from the Universal sci-fi movie “Oblivion”.
Although only a teaser photo of the Lotus C-01 was released, the company states that, “In the next few weeks, images of Lotus Motorcycles will be released and will give a first insight into what to expect from the new Lotus C-01.”
