The now traditional annual “Sic Supermoto Day” memorial charity race attended by numerous racing stars held in honor of the late MotoGP star Marco Simoncelli at the Latina circuit in Italy suffered a tragic accident today when former 250 Grand Prix star Doriano Romboni died as a result of injuries suffered in a freak crash. Reports from European media state that Romboni lost control and ended up tied up with the bike as it crossed the track into another portion of the circuit where he was unavoidably hit by an oncoming bike. Romboni was immediately transferred to Santa Maria Goretti hospital, where he later succumbed to head injuries despite the best efforts of the hospital staff to save him.
A six-time winner in the ‘90s in both the 125cc and 250cc World Championship Grand Prix classes, Romboni was one of the many stars taking part in this weekend's Sic Supermoto Day event. The 44-year-old also raced in the World Superbike Championship, and for the past three years has been the racing director of the Puccetti Racing Kawasaki team in the World Supersport and CIV Italian national series. Romboni was the father of three children, and Paolo Simoncelli (father of Marco) stated that while events were canceled for the rest of the day, that the competitors wished to return to the circuit tomorrow to both honor their fallen comrade and also help benefit proceeds to Romboni’s family.
