I see a common mistake in this procedure.  Less sag means a higher ride height, but it is not stiffer.  Referring to more preload as being stiffer is the cause of much misunderstanding.  It would be better to explain why race bikes and street bikes are set up differently.  One example you gave above, more preload gives racers more ground clearance. Another consideration is that tracks are generally smoother than public roads so there is less need for extension past total sag.  Of course, one downside of adding front preload is earlier topping out under acceleration.
