Developed specifically for street machines in the 600 cc-1200 cc category, the BT-020 will be supplied in 9 sizes, from 120/70ZR17 to 180/55ZR17. The design is based on computer simulation using Bridgestone's 3D-CTDM (Comprehensive Tyre Design Method) technology. It features a large crown radius and unique anti-shock sidewall profile for high speed stability. A proven silica compound gives exceptional wet performance and wear resistance.
Computer simulation has also guided the tread architecture of this purpose-designed tyre range. The front pattern incorporates twin centre lines and high-angled grooves for efficient water removal, while wide lug-type blocks provide enhanced traction and grip. For the rear, a main diagonal groove ejects water and optimises vertical rigidity, as well as helping to create a striking appearance. Small grooves at the tread edge provide good grip and 'feel' in cornering.
The BT-020 also features Bridgestones famous Dual Aligned Compound (DAC) technology, which allows variable alignment of the molecules in a single sheet of rubber. This has enabled the central tread area to be optimised for wear resistance under acceleration and braking, while the shoulder gives strong cornering ability. And because only one tread rubber is used, performance remains constant throughout the life of the tyre. Volume production of the BT-020 started at the end of 1999 in the Nasu plant in Japan. The sales in Europe will start in the spring of 2000, when the BT-020 will replace the current BT-54 series. It has already been chosen for OEM fitment to year 2000 models by a number of manufacturers. In addition, it will be available on the replacement market in March 2000 .
"Our increasing success rate in top-level motorcycle competition, both on- and off-road, shows that Bridgestone/Firestone has a winning formula," said Gunther Podevyn: Manager, Motorcycle Tyre Engineering, Bridgestone/Firestone Europe. "In the BT-020, we are taking advantage of the same race-bred technologies to produce a tyre that provides the safety and comfort needed to make sporty touring a pleasurable experience under all conditions."
